The Astoria Civic Association held its annual bike race this past Sunday, May 20, drawing hundreds of cheerful participants and their parents. Taking place on Shore Boulevard in Astoria, the race saw children of all ages competing for trophies, but everyone who attended received a medal, tee-shirt and a great time.
The race had a total of 150 children competing in 16 different events, divided into eight age groups for both boys and girls. The youngest group, the Lollipop Division (4 and younger), pedaled only 50 yards, while the oldest children participating, the Intermediate Division (11-year olds) went half a mile. Hundreds of parents and wellwishers from around Queens lined the streets to root on the participants, who rode their bikes on a hazy and cool Sunday morning.
City Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr., who helps organize and sponsor the event every year, was joined in the activities by a number of local officials, including former Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., Assemblymember Mike Gianaris, 114th Police Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Brian McCarthy, New York Power Authority Regional Government Affairs Director Joseph Leary and representatives of various other elected officials. The special guests had their own race, which McCarthy won by a nose (although Vallone Jr. has lodged an official complaint with the Board regarding the Inspector's use of a souped-up police bike).

"This is a wonderful community event that combines exercise, competition and fun, all things we want to encourage among our children," Vallone Jr. said. "If we can instill a love of bike riding, and outdoor activities in general, in our youngest residents, then we ensure an active, healthy and vibrant New York for years to come."
The bike race is a tradition that stretches back 27 years. In addition to Vallone, sponsors included Con Edison, the New York Power Authority, Commerce Bank, US Powergen- Astoria Generating Station,
